Modern Slavery: A Student's Concern

Last semester, the Year 10 English Foundation students spent time exploring the issues raised by Saroo Brierley’s novel “Lion”. As part of their investigation, students were invited to write a letter of concern to a stakeholder regarding an issue they felt strongly about.

Heidi Bromley wrote a compelling letter CEO of Taldumande Youth Services regarding her concerns about Modern Slavery in Australia. To Heidi’s her credit, she received a reply from Eleni Argi, the Modern Slavery Youth Services Coordinator, who arranged to visit our class at Sacred Heart College to answer Heidi’s questions in person, and share the work that her Taldumande Youth Services are offering our community. You can read Heidi's stirring letter by clicking here: Modern Slavery

In response to Heidi's valuable questions about what can schools do to assist in the prevention on modern slavery in Australia, Eleni met with our English, Humanities and Religious Education teachers and shared teaching resources and ideas from the “Honour My Choice” program to enhance our learning experiences for students when approaching topics of Modern Slavery.

Thank you to Heidi Bromley for initiating such a valuable experiences for her peers and teachers, and inspiring others by showing that even from the smallest steps, impactful change can grow!
