On the 11th of June Sacred Heart College held a Reconciliation celebration for all students. Some students made a pledge about what they could do to take action and how to support the cause. There were so many students at the event that wanted to celebrate, it was great to see that students were interested in learning and celebrating the Indigenous culture.
There was colouring, books to read, music to listen to and cookies to eat. Students were also making badges and they looked amazing. Thank you to all the people who participated in this event.

Hi my name is Abbey Clohesy and I am in year 9.
I recently auditioned for the Sleeping Beauty production with the Australian Dance Company and I was lucky enough to receive a soloist position. It is based in Melbourne and it is directed by 2 former principle dancers of the Australian Ballet.
The production has unfortunately been postponed to next year as a result of the current situation in Melbourne, but I am looking forward to being able to perform on stage again after a year of no productions or shows because of the coronavirus.
Students will finish Term 2 on Thursday 24 June, at the normal finish time of 3.22pm.
College Reception will be open the first week of the holidays, 8.00am - 4.00pm. We will be closed for the second week of the holidays.
Please be advised that Monday 12 June is a student free day due to a staff Professional Learning day.
We look forward to welcoming our students back for Term 3 on Tuesday 13 June.
In July, Year 9 and 10 students will have the opportunity to attend 'Taster Tours' at The Gordon. Interested students will gain insight to workshops, studios simulated facilities, teachers and current VET students at work.

A widely anticipated music event each year is the Combined Band Event which invites young brass and woodwind instrumentalists from schools around Geelong to spend an afternoon playing music together.
This year was even more anticipated than usual, as the 2020 event had unfortunately been cancelled. On Thursday May 27, from 2.00 - 7.00pm the Music staff at St. Ignatius College took on the enormous task of bringing the bands of Sacred Heart, Clonard, St. Joseph’s College, Covenant College, and Belmont Secondary College together in one space under the expert baton of one conductor. This year’s guest Conductor was Geelong trumpeter and composer, Ed Fairley who immediately created a rapport with his young musicians and led them through productive rehearsals of the two chosen pieces.
Rehearsals began at 2.00pm and the musicians worked hard on their music until a delicious pizza and donut meal was served later in the afternoon. Then it was back into the auditorium for a warm up and an entertaining concert for parents, staff and friends.
Sacred Heart instrumentalists included students from the Prelude Ensemble, led by Martin Greet and from our College Orchestra which is directed by Allister Cox. These students displayed wonderful attitudes of communication and collaboration, which made them excellent ambassadors for the College and for our music program.
To hear the rich and thrilling sound of over 100 instrumentalists playing together is an overwhelming and inspirational experience, and one which will no doubt remembered by each player for a long time to come. We are already looking forward to attending this event next year!
Here are some student reflections of the day:
I liked getting to know other musicians at the event. The music was really nice when it all came together – it sounded different to when we rehearsed on our own. - Isobel Eastmure 9SISBK
I found it a very valuable experience. I enjoyed getting together with other fellow instrumentalists of all different levels to play and have fun. - Hayley Hunt 10 PAAAH
I really enjoyed meeting new people who have the same interests, and it was a really fun experience. I would love to attend again next year. - Charmaine Turner 9LOKEM
At the outset of the 2021, Sacred Heart College Choir Director Kate Rees established a new choral initiative to more effectively celebrate the many vocal talents and interests of our students. One of the successful outcomes of this reinvention was the Broadway Chorus. This group of enthusiastic young singers meets every Tuesday lunchtime and their repertoire comprises favourite songs from Broadway Productions.
The school Assembly which was scheduled for Monday May 24 provided the perfect setting for their debut performance. The Broadway musical, Hamilton, is receiving accolades around the world and enjoys enormous popularity. The song ‘My Shot’ from that musical was therefore a winning choice for this debut.
The performers presented the song with great commitment and energy, once again expertly directed by Kate Rees, and were warmly received by the audience of students and staff. To hear live music once again presented at an assembly after such a long absence due to restrictions, was a joy indeed.
We look forward in enthusiastic anticipation to hearing a great deal from Broadway Chorus in the months ahead.
On Monday 24th May, 35 students travelled up the road to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre to compete in the SCSA Basketball Tournament. All teams showed great skill, teamwork, encouragement and sportsmanship throughout the day.
Both the Junior A & B came in 4th for their divisions against some tough competition. The Intermediates won the entire competition, playing Avila College in the Grand Final. The Senior girls who battled with 6 players against tough competition, finished 6th.
Great effort by all girls, they should be proud of themselves. Thank you to Miss Deb Bohan, Miss Bridget Taylor and Miss Scarlett Hocking for their great coaching on the day!

It was a great thrill to have accomplished theatre performer, Derek Taylor, join our SHC vocalists and teachers for the inaugural Vocal Master Class in McAuley Hall on Sunday 23 May, 9.30am - 5.00pm. It was an early start for everyone, but after a hot beverage to get started, the group of around 30 students from SHC, Geelong College and Geelong Grammar were happily singing in harmony together.
Derek is a graduate of Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide and the Queensland Conservatorium respectively. He has performed extensively in theatrical productions of Cats, Chess, The Secret Garden, Phantom of the Opera, and Chicago to name just a few.
Derek’s warmth, wit and musical expertise soon had all participants engaged, and his direction during the two Master Class sessions was invaluable. Vocalists tried new techniques, and explored a variety of ways in which to interpret text and communicate more effectively with their audience.
To conclude the afternoon session, parents and friends were invited to an informal concert in McAuley Hall which was well attended and enthusiastically received. The concert featured choir pieces rehearsed during the group singing sessions, and three soloists put into practice some of their newly learned ideas for the receptive audience.
Many thanks to Derek for an unforgettable day, and to SHC’s incredibly talented Vocal Teachers, Anna- Lee Robertson and Kate Rees for establishing this wonderful event, which we hope will continue year on year.

This year saw our girls run the picturesque cross-country track around our school grounds on 26 May. Year’s 7-10 saw all the Year level taking part, whilst Year 11-12 volunteered.
The day had sunny and windy conditions which made for a true cross-country event. Those who finished in the top 15 in Year 7-12 received 1 individual house point. Thank you to all staff and assistants who helped and supported across the day. Our spot prize draw for many prizes after medal presentations for each year level, enabled students who crossed the line in the first 100 to be eligible for a prize. Hopefully this added to the fun and exercise for all competitors.
Congratulations to all who completed the 3km course either running or walking.
Top 10 for each Year level were as follows:
Year 7
Year 8
Year 9
Year 10

Community Project is a subject exclusive to Year 12 VCAL students where we take an issue that we are passionate about and try to make a difference with a project we create independently.
Myself and Lucy Wood have decided to create a project centred around mental health awareness but specialising in early prevention. Seeing and experiencing the impact all the suicides last year had on our community and also seeing next to nothing being done about what was happening at the time Lucy and I decided to try and make a difference with our Community Project.
Our project is going to be a fundraising night consisting of a 2-course meal, guest speakers, a silent auction and a raffle we will be selling tickets for before the night with all the funds raised going to Headspace. Posting about our fundraising night asking for support and donations on Facebook led a reporter from the Surf Coast Times to look into our project and ask to write an article about us and our project which was recently posted in the Surf Coast and Bellarine Times.
There are also lots of other projects going on including a partnership with Geelong Mums, elderly pen pals, disability support, youth homelessness and many more. This is such an exciting subject to be a part of because you get to make a real difference in our community and learn some amazing skills that you’ll have for life.

7ATU learned a lot about the structure of the eye in Science in Week 8. Here are some of their reflections:
What did you learn? What eye parts could you identify?
I could Identify the lens, cornea, optic nerve, pupil, muscle, fat, iris and tissue. I learnt that there is fat to protect the eyes from being damaged
I learnt that the lens is like a magnifier glass. I could identify the lens and the jelly.
I found it really interesting that when you put the lens on the paper, it magnified it.
I learned that a cow's eye is very similar to a human eye.
The cornea is the front layer of your eye, the pupil is the black dot in the middle of your eye that is a gateway for light. The Iris is the part of your eye with colour. The lens is behind the pupil and iris and magnifies.
What went well:
I didn't vomit
Was dissecting an eye a good way to learn about the parts of the eye?
Yes it was because you can see the parts of the eye in real life and see where they are in the eye.
I think that dissecting the eye really helped my understanding of how an eye looks, feels, and works.
Dissecting was very informative and helpful to learn all of the parts of the eye.
I feel dissecting an eye was a really good way to learn about the eye because we got to see it hands on and not just an image or video.
You have a chance to win a 5 night Port Douglas holiday for two!
