Year 7 Camps

Our Year 7 students enjoyed a fun camp. Here are some reflections by students:

Camp was a super fun adventure. The camp staff were amazing, the food was great and wait I almost forgot about all the activities. They had many great activities on offer, such as…Horse riding, crate climbing, amazing race, raft building, team building games, archery and many more. In wrap up I thought that camp was really fun. It was a great experience that I will treasure forever and I would really like to thank all the teachers and staff that made that adventure possible. Isabela Townsing, CLCMK

Camp was so much fun because I got to do so many things I have never done before and I made new friends. Some things I loved were the food, crate climbing, raft building, archery and horse riding. At this camp I had great experiences and it will be a memory forever. That is my reflection on year 7 camp at Mill Valley Ranch. Millie Whale, LOKSC

Camp was full of fun things: like crate climbing, team work with raft building, and horse riding. All of the year 7s are delighted that we got to share this experience with each other in this ranch-styled adventure camp. Our amazing teachers joined us on this special ;learning experience, and helped us out when needed (so a big thanks to them!). We are so grateful we were provided with this experience. Vale Belinda Matthews

Our school community was saddened recently by the passing of teaching staff member Belinda Matthews, who died peacefully from a brain aneurysm on the evening of Friday 28 January.

Belinda was a valued friend, colleague and teacher who taught VCE geography and humanities. During her 14 years at Sacred Heart College, Belinda co-ordinated the SOAR program (Years 8 and 11) and recently took on the role of Learning Design Coach.

Belinda is now in God’s care. Our prayers and thoughts are with her family, Dave, Belinda’s husband and her sons Max and Sam, her extended family and all her friends.

Please see below a fitting tribute to Belinda from the Geelong Advertiser on Tuesday 1 February.

Queen Scout Kaitlyn Bird

Congratulations to Kaitlyn Bird 12CLEP who recently was awarded the Queen Scout Award. Kaitlyn is a member of the Nindethana Collective Venturers, and such an achievement is truly remarkable.

The King’s Scout/Queen’s Scout Award is the Peak Award in the Venturer Scout Section (formerly Senior Scouts from 1947) and carries an outstanding reputation within Scouting and the Community.

To achieve this prestigious award today, a Venturer Scout must be able to set personal goals, plan and organise activities with themselves and others. They are required to maintain a high level of determination to reach milestones and complete attainment to the very best of their abilities.

The award was founded in 1911 under the patronage of King Edward VII as the King’s Scout Badge and continues under the current Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II from 1952 as Queen’s Scout Award.

In Victoria, it continues to be gained by around 5% of Venturer Scouts each year with the Royal Certificate presented at Government House by the Governor of Victoria, as the representative of the Queen.

2022 SCSA Triathlon

A beautiful, fresh morning on Tuesday 22 February made this year’s triathlon at Eastern Beach Geelong quite spectacular. There were 10 schools participating this year. Clonard and SHC represented Geelong whilst the other schools were from Melbourne. The competition was tough and team support very prominent, as was sportsmanship.

The SHC teams were very competitive in all 3 divisions (Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors). Well done to our SHC team who represented us in such a competitive all round effort and congratulations to the individual students who won medals for placing in the top 10.

SHC won the Senior section, came 5th in the Juniors, was Equal 4th in the Intermediates and was 5th in the Overall Aggregate.

On Tuesday 8 February, we marked the 14th SHC Triathlon competition which was held at Eastern Beach/ Eastern Gardens on a beautiful, sunny afternoon. Students completed a 200m swim, a 2.8km bike ride and a 1km run. All participants showed great determination to complete the challenging course, given the warm conditions.

Thank you to all the staff and student helpers who assisted on the day.

My First Week at SHC

My first week at SHC has been exciting and nerve-racking! SHC is so big and there are a lot of girls here.

This year I am really looking forward to Dance and our Year 7 camp. My favourite classes this week have been English, Maths, Science and Drama.

I have made a nice group of new friends. Most of them are in my learning (Stormanstown) group. I am still trying to find my way around the school. I have got lost once or twice, but I found my classes (I’m getting better at finding my way around).

I really like my Mentor Group teacher - she is nice and welcoming.

School Assembly Student Achievements

Congratulations to all our junior and intermediate rowers from years 7 to 10 who competed in the Rowing Victoria Junior Schoolgirls State Championship on Saturday 26 February. It was a great day of racing for all crews who have been working really hard with their training since last year. A special mention to Beatrix Hearn who came third in the year 10 scull division one event, winning a bronze medal for Sacred Heart. Well done to all crews, which included the following students: Beatrix Hearn, Olivia Broadbent, Olivia Brown, Ruby Davey, Alana Mauff, Ariel van der Poll, Charlotte Schouten-O’Bryan, Ines Douglas-Murnane, Isabelle Korth, Lucy King, Molly Graham, Rikki McMaster, Annika Baranski, Laura Ahearn, Madeleine Dover, Grace Farley, Sophie Klupacs, Zoe McCardel, Chloe Myers, Ella Robinson, Lily Corp, Rio Smith, Eve Daley, Geneva Brigden, Evie Omer, Emma Sexton, Bridie Larkins.

Our senior states regatta was over the weekend of 5-6 March, and a small group of girls went over to Ballarat. The girl’s quad rowed well but missed doing their final due to the poor weather which led to the cancellation of races.

Congratulations to Eliza Ahearn and Evie Timms-Honner winning gold in the Schoolgirls Double at Ballarat today making them the Victorian State Champions! Despite the rain, they won their heat and the final and we are super proud of them. The SHC rowing program has been wonderful this season and the girls are really benefiting from the support of Laura Schouten and the team of coaches. We hope for another great day tomorrow with more racing for more SHC girls at Lake Wendouree.

Congratulations to Kaitlyn Bird who was awarded the Queen’s Scout Award. The King’s Scout/Queen’s Scout Award is the Peak Award in the Venturer Scout Section (formerly Senior Scouts from 1947) and carries an outstanding reputation within Scouting and the Community.

The School of Engineering at Deakin University is also pleased to offer an incentive encouragement award to Kaitlyn for her studies in science at SHC. This award is designed to inspire Kaitlyn to further progress in these subjects and encourage Kaitlyn to enter into the field of Engineering at Deakin. Congratulations Kaitlyn on all your achievements so far.

Congratulations to Sofia Castello who in late November 2021 was selected as a Young Ambassador for the Shrine of Remembrance. Sofia is the fifth Sacred Heart student to be selected for this important leadership program and follows in the footsteps of Eleanor Naylor and Erin Nisbet who have been ‘Young Ambassadors’ throughout 2020 and 2021.

Sofia described the handover ceremony and being able to see behind the scenes at the Shrine as both a privilege and a chance to start to learn more about the building and the people / sacrifice it represents. Sofia beamed, “I felt connected and touched - it was unbelievable. Having experienced the induction day, I can’t wait to take on my role as a Young Ambassador for the Shrine”.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the SHC Triathlon. Our overall division winners were: Chloe Reyntjes for Junior, Maggie Clatworthy for Intermediate and Chanel Simsic for Senior.

Congratulations to the SCSA SHC triathlon team. The SHC teams were very competitive in all 3 divisions (Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors). Well done to our SHC team who represented us in such a competitive all-round effort and congratulations to the individual students who won medals for placing in the top 10. SHC won the Senior section, 5th in the Juniors, Equal 4th in the Intermediates and 5th in the Overall Aggregate.

Congratulations to staff member Stacey Carmichael who recently directed Summer of the Aliens which was performed at the Woodbin Theatre. The production included SHC alumni of former students Tara Dunstan, Ryan Tracey and sound and lighting operations, Kip Cowland. Ms Carmichael did an outstanding job after the production was postponed a number of times and the cast often had to rehearse Via zoom.

Congratulations to Ava Davies on her role of Kendra in 13 the Musical Melbourne performance last week. Also, congratulations to Elyssa Jeffreys on her ensemble role in the upcoming Geelong musical Chicago produced by past staff member Marg Wills. This production also features SHC alumni Molly Jones, Brooke Lechinno, Lucy Blackwood and Jemma Lowther. Well done also to Lily Mullen and Sienna Palamara on their ensemble roles in Red Door Theatre company's production of Rock of Ages. Tickets go on sale in April!

Congratulations to Lainey Karlich, Sophie Cutropia, Bianca Mrzljak and Georgina Ure on their acceptance into the Deakin Accelerate program.

Congratulations also to Bridget Hart on her Melbourne University Extension course in Psychology. We can’t wait to see what you all achieve this year!

As part of COP 26 UN Climate Change Summit last year, Matilda Iles (Year 10) planned, filmed, and edited a video explaining the impacts of climate change on her home and her country - Australia. Matilda worked hard to develop and finalise the video in a short amount of time during lockdown, before it was submitted to the Eden Project. The film was then used as part of a documentary that was presented at COP26 Global Climate Change Summit in Glasgow.
