Wednesday 1 February saw all our students return to SHC for another productive year of learning. We are sure it will be a rewarding year for all our students and staff, with many achievements and personal growth attained.
Our newest students, our Year 7 cohort, were warmly welcomed on St Stephen’s Green, where they were grouped in their respective Houses for the very first time. Then it was time to break off into Mentor Groups and get to know their fellow classmates and Mentor Group teachers.
An information session then helped the students gain an understanding of what it is to be a Sacred Heart College student, and a fun Treasure Hunt around the College helped in navigating around the many beautiful buildings and surrounds we are so lucky to have here at SHC.
Lunch was followed by activities undertaken by the Year 7s alongside their Year 10 ‘buddies’, who will no doubt prove to be a valuable resource to our Year 7 students throughout their first year at SHC.
We wish all our students and staff a wonderful year here at SHC!
A rather overcast day greeted us this year, and the venue was full of activity and colour for our annual Swimming Carnival at Kardinia Pool. The day turned beautifully sunny for a swim or jump in the diving pool. The trials were conducted in the morning, with finals to follow in the afternoon.
It was great to see so many students out having fun and participating in the different events offered to them throughout the day. The houses showed great colour and imagination through their different themes: 'C of Clairvaux', Loyola '70’s', Padua 'When I Grow Up' and 'Siena in the Wild West'.
The Fashion By the Pool and House Cheers were once again well supported by the house members.

We recently welcomed LifeChanger back to SHC. Our Year 10s engaged in a Mentor Development workshop focusing on elevating leadership and mentoring skills to help build rapport and support for younger our students, fostering a more connected school community.
Some capabilities highlighted during the workshop included: developing active listening skills, guiding conversations, sharing knowledge and the importance of seeking support in times of need.
On Monday 12 February we celebrated International Day of Women and Girls in Science. At SHC, we offer students the chance to explore science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. Our Year 7 students take DigiTech classes where they learn about cybersecurity, programming languages such as Python and JavaScript, and even Minecraft courses. In the past, Year 11 chemistry students visited Anther Geelong Distillery to create perfume and learn about the distillation process. Dr. Dervilla McGowan inspired the students to follow their passions and pursue careers in male-dominated industries.
Our Design Futures Lab works on long-term projects focused on sustainability, material science, and architecture. During Geelong Design Week 2023, they showcased a pavilion made of 'coffee concrete', emphasising the potential of reclaimed waste materials. The lab's commitment to pushing design boundaries will continue with a 2024 exhibition featuring Grown materials.
The Blind Date with a Book event was celebrated in style, with over 80 students selecting their unknown book based on wrapped appearance, size, and perhaps a favourite number. The usual practice of looking at cover images and reading blurbs was dispensed. Instead, students were challenged to enter the unknown.
The unveiling was great fun. Now, the challenge awaits reading something unknowingly chosen.
On Wednesday 7 February, we marked the 16th SHC Triathlon competition which was held at Eastern Beach/Eastern Gardens on a beautiful, sunny afternoon. Students completed a 200m swim, 2.8km bike ride and 1km run. All participants showed great determination to complete the challenging course. Thank you to all the staff and student helpers who assisted on the day.
We congratulate all competitors!

Well done Laura and Rio!
